Long Islanders can expect near-perfect conditions this weekend with the forecast calling for sunny skies and temperatures in the 80s, but beachgoers are advised to be careful of potentially dangerous rip currents.

Saturday's forecast calls for highs in the low to mid 80s before dropping into mid 60s overnight and the upper 50s in the pine barrens, said Jay Engel, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Upton.

There is a moderate risk for rip currents throughout the day at Long Island's ocean beaches, the weather service said. Beachgoers can expect water temperatures around 70 degrees along the South Shore with wave heights of about 4 feet, according to a weather service advisory.

"It is definitely something Long Islanders should be aware of," said News 12 Long Island meteorologist John Isgro. "Most folks who are familiar with the ocean waters along the beaches will probably [hopefully] take note of the advisory and stay alert."

Sunday's forecast is more of the same with temperatures in the low to mid 80s and mostly sunny skies, Engel said.

Monday brings a slight chance of rain in the afternoon with temperatures in the upper 70s and low 80s. Late Monday evening brings a better chance of precipitation with the potential for heavy rain after midnight, Engel said.
