Stormy weather possible Thursday afternoon on LI, NYC as paradegoers head back home

A dry, sunny weekend with temperatures in the low 80s across Long Island is expected as golf fans flock to the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club.

The National Weather Service is predicting Friday to be mostly cloudy and windy, with gusts reaching 30 mph, but for the clouds to clear up by Friday night. Saturday and Sunday are both forecasted to be sunny, with highs in the low 80s across the island.

At Shinnecock, Saturday’s high is expected to be in the low 80s, with a moderate breeze, although gusts could reach up to 30 mph. Sunday is predicted to be slightly cooler and less breezy, with a high in the upper 70s and slower winds around 10-15 mph.

Rainfall is not expected Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

“The next main rain event coming into the forecast could start as early as late Sunday night. That’s the next chance for any showers,” the weather service's meteorologist John Cristantello said.

The weather service is cautioning Suffolk County beachgoers to be on the lookout for moderate to high risk rip currents on Friday, while bathers in Nassau could see a moderate risk. Gusty winds and higher waves are also expected, with around 4-foot waves forecasted. The weather service recommends that only experienced swimmers enter the ocean during moderate risk periods and cautions against any ocean swimming during high risk periods.
