Apparently Mother Nature didn't get the memo that it's still spring.

Long Island is under an air quality alert from 2 p.m. until 11 p.m. Thursday, according to the National Weather Service,  with temperatues expected to soar into the 90s.

Under these conditions, young children, the elderly and people with health problems such as asthma or heart disease should take extra caution when going outside.

Nassau County said it would be opening five cooling centers.

There's not much hope for breezy relief either, with winds forecast to just be 10 to 15 mph. The heat index should be in the upper 90s, according to the service.

A cloudy evening and chances of thunderstorms Thursday night should help the Island cool off a bit.

Friday's temps are expected to be less scorching, with highs in the 80s and the continued chances of thunderstorms.
