LI forecast: Rainy Saturday before heat wave
Clouds will likely hang over Long Island as Saturday's weather is expected to be wet and overcast before a heat wave pushes into the area early next week, forecasters said.
"There will be some clearing today. By tonight, we'll have more clear skies than clouds, but through this afternoon it will still be partly cloudy," said Joe Pollina, with the National Weather Service in Upton.
Saturday's temperatures are expected to be in the upper 70s to around 80 degrees. Sunday, however, will be a little warmer with highs in the lower to mid-80s.
Long Islanders should brace themselves for heat and humidity that will be "oppressive" come Monday, Pollina said, with temperatures in the low to mid-90s that will feel much warmer.
The average recorded high temperature in Islip for July 13 through July 15 is 82 degrees and the low is 66 degrees, Pollina said.
The heat wave is due to that cold front that left the region Thursday to go out into the Atlantic but will return over the next few days as a warm front, Pollina said.
It is an atypical weather pattern because fronts usually move from west to east, Pollina said.
The technical term is retrograding.
"It is actually doing opposite of what it normally does," he added.
