LI heat wave, three days in the 90s
Consider it the start of a hot spell.
As of 3:24 p.m. Monday, the temperature at Long Island MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma was 91 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.
And with meteorologists forecasting 90-degree weather on Long Island through Wednesday, excluding the slightly cooler South Shore, Monday just might be day one of a heat wave, which is defined as three consecutive days of temperatures in the 90s.
In addition, an air quality health advisory is in effect Tuesday from 11 a.m. through 11 p.m., indicating an ozone level likely to exceed an Air Quality Index value of 100, meaning increased health concerns, according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and State Department of Health.
The Town of Hempstead announced Monday the opening of 15 cooling centers and extended operating hours at seven beaches and eight pools through Wednesday.
"During heat waves, it is important for residents to cool down and find relief from the blistering temperatures," said Supervisor Kate Murray in a news release. "We urge those without access to air conditioning or a cool place to stay, to utilize our cooling centers, pools and beaches throughout the heat wave."
Relief is in sight, said David Stark, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Upton. A cold front is expected Wednesday afternoon and evening bringing with it an increased chance of showers and thunderstorms.
Look for temperatures in the low-to-mid 80s Thursday, Friday and into the weekend, he said.
