LI weather: Rain to clear, followed by chilly temperatures

Light but steady rain will continue to fall on Long Island until it begins to taper off starting about 3 p.m. in Nassau County and about 5 p.m. in Suffolk, forecasters said.

Temperatures will hit only about 57 degrees Sunday with a notable breeze of 15 to 20 mph coming from the north, said Tim Morrin, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Upton.

In all on Sunday, Long Island is expected to get an additional 1⁄4 inch to 1⁄2 inch of rain, after already receiving between a 1⁄2 inch to 3⁄4 inch in the past day. Suffolk County got the larger amounts.

While skies will gradually clear in the evening, it’ll be a “chilly and breezy” night with winds picking up to 18 to 23 mph, he said.

Columbus Day will be bright and sunny, with temperatures around 63 degrees, about 3 or 4 degrees below the average for this time of year, Morrin said. There will continue to be a breeze from the north at about 15 to 20 mph.

Temperatures overnight for Monday into Tuesday will drop to 38, with a chance of patchy frost in some places, particularly those prone to lower temperatures like the pine barrens, he said. Tuesday during the day will be sunny with a high of 63 degrees.
