It's a great weekend for leaf-peeping on Long Island

While 70-degree days will be just a memory by this weekend, Long Island will be showing off foliage that's near peak.

"Fall colors have really taken off on Long Island over the past week," the New York Fall Foliage Report said in its weekly update on ILoveNY.com.

Field observers in Riverhead expect 60 percent leaf transition, the report said, with a show of bright yellows, oranges, reds and purples. Offering similar shades in Nassau, color change is expected to be more in the 50 percent to 60 percent range, say spotters in East Meadow. The bulk of the state is already past peak, the report said, with the Hudson Valley right on target with brilliant peak colors.

On the weekend, Saturday may be a better bet, with highs around 60 and mostly sunny skies, with increasing clouds in the afternoon and a 30 percent chance of showers overnight, according to the National Weather Service's latest forecast.

Sunday looks to be warmer, with highs in the lower 60s, but also brings the chance for morning showers, followed by mostly cloudy skies. So that could be the better day for Instagramming those great foliage shots.
