The start of Long Island’s workweek opens with the chance of light morning rain, the National Weather Service said.

Monday’s commute has cloudy skies and light winds at 6 to 8 mph from the northeast shifting to the southeast in the afternoon, the service’s Upton office said.

Daily highs push to the mid 50s.

There’s also a chance of morning showers and rain later that could leave as much as one-quarter inch of new rainfall amounts across Nassau and Suffolk counties, the service said.

News 12 Long Island meteorologist Rich Hoffman said the damp, unsettled weather will persist through the week.

“Lots of clouds and a chance of showers each day through Friday,” Hoffman said.

Traffic on major roadways mostly was moving well during the morning commute, according to the state Department of Transportation website, informny.com.

The Long Island Rail Road also was reporting good service at its site, mta.info/lirr.
