As the first official day of summer winds down, cloud cover is expected to increase in the overnight hours, forecasters say.

Along with it comes a 30 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms after around 4 a.m. Tuesday and lasting through around midmorning, said Jay Engle, National Weather Service meteorologist based in Upton.

Following a break of a few hours — and depending on its track — a system could bring another batch of showers and thunderstorms, potentially more widespread than the first, and lasting through the afternoon, he said. As of late afternoon Monday, there was a 30 percent chance for this.

Not to be lost amid the possibility of rain is the forecast for high temperatures Tuesday in the low to mid 80s.

As for the following day, Wednesday is expected to be “a sunny and beautiful day,” Engle said, with highs in the low to mid 80s.
