Long Island forecast: Summer ‘weekend gem’

Get ready, Long Islanders.
We’re in store for a “weekend gem, with dry and sunny weather,” said Rich Hoffman, News 12 Long Island meteorologist.
Following a foggy start to Friday, the day was to bring mostly sunny skies with highs in the upper 70s, he said.
But, conditions got just a bit warmer. By around noon, the temperature at Long Island MacArthur Airport was 81 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.
Beach goers should be aware of a moderate risk for rip currents Friday along the South Shore, with a very high UV index, meaning unprotected skin can burn quickly, and with water temperatures in the 60s.
The overnight hours can see areas of fog, with lows in the lower 60s, Hoffman said.
Saturday is expected to bring similar weather conditions, with temperatures by Sunday rising to the low to mid-80s.
Of course, these continuing dry conditions come at a price, and, “we do need rain,” Hoffman, says.
Long Island was just moved from the abnormally dry to the moderate drought category by the U.S. Drought Monitor. As of day-end Thursday, precipitation for the month at the airport was 1.04 inches, which is 2.44 below normal.
