Long Island forecast: It'll be hot, but less humid Sunday

Sweltering heat and oppressive humidity chafed Long Islanders for another day this holiday weekend.

Sunday's forecast calls for more hot temperatures, albeit with less humidity, according to Dan Hoffman, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Upton. And there's a chance of thunderstorms late this afternoon and into early evening.

The shore is where many went to escape temperatures in the 90s Saturday. Scores of people drove to Robert Moses State Park, filling some parking lots to capacity. With coolers in hand, the beachgoers plopped down onto towels and chairs under umbrellas that covered the beach, where the temperatures hit the upper 80s.

Robert Moses, which had sand erosion and severe damage to its roads and boardwalk from superstorm Sandy, opened its beaches in May.

Over the past week, lifeguards there had an unusually high number of rescues, about 30 at one field, said lifeguard Paul Butler, of Long Beach. Last week's storm and strong winds created powerful rip currents that led to "tough, life-or-death rescues," he said.

Kathy D'Andria, of East Northport, said she "dragged" her husband, Joe, to the beach "to get away from the kids." Joe D'Andria served in the Navy, but he said he hates the sand. "The things you do for love," he joked.

Multiple power outages caused by Saturday's heat struck the Island. The largest, in Bayville, left 1,837 customers without electricity, the Long Island Power Authority said.

The highest temperature recorded by the National Weather Service Saturday was 92 degrees, just before 3 p.m. at MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma. The heat index made it feel like 100.

Temperatures Sunday should reach the upper 80s, according to the weather service. Sunday night's low should be in the lower 70s.
