The National Weather Service issued an advisory Monday evening warning that it was tracking a "significant" coastal storm hitting the region Friday into Saturday.

"There is the potential for a coastal storm to bring a significant wintry mix to portions of the area Friday night into Saturday night," the weather service said."Uncertainties remain with the track and intensity of the coastal storm and the impacts the storm will have."

The forecast for Long Island is now for a 40% to 50% chance of snow Friday, Friday night and Saturday.

Later Monday, in a tweet, the weather service said that while the track of the storm is still difficult to predict, "It is becoming more likely that it will bring significant snow, sleet and freezing rain to the region," making for hazardous travel, along with strong coastal winds and possible flooding.

Before that, the temperature will soar up to more than 40 degrees Tuesday — a seasonable high amid a stretch of below normal days with wind chills making it feel even colder, the weather service said.

After a few overnight snow showers, the mercury will actually rise overnight into Tuesday. It will be partly sunny with a high of 42 degrees, although there will be a gusty wind of up to 21 mph, forecasters said.

But the relative warmth won't last long.

"Arctic air will return to the region," the weather service said.

Tuesday night, the mercury will drop to 19 degrees with wind chills returning of between 10 and 15 degrees.

Wednesday and Thursday, despite the sun, won't get out of the 20s for a high. Wednesday night the low will be a frigid 10 degrees. Thursday night the low will be 23.

Clouds thicken Friday, when the high for any snowstorm is predicted to be 35 and the low is 22, going back up to a high of 31 degrees on Saturday.

On Sunday, which should be mostly sunny, the high is 28 degrees and the low is a frigid 19, according to the forecast.
