Long Island forecast: Slight respite from deep freeze

Ready for a respite from the face-numbing deep freeze?
Temperatures on Long Island Sunday afternoon will reach the low 30s and the icy winds of late will weaken and have less bite, said David Stark, a spokesman for the National Weather Service in Upton.
"The trend is for it not to be as cold as we saw this week," Stark said Saturday. "By the middle of the week, we'll be getting close to the seasonal average [upper 30s for highs and mid-20s for lows]."
Daytime temperatures Monday afternoon should be in the upper 30s or low 40s.
"Monday will be one of the warmer days we've seen since probably last weekend," Stark said.
Monday's morning commute, however, could be a little messy. A wave of low pressure passing to the south and moving west is expected to bring enough moisture to possibly produce rain or snow, the forecaster said.
"There may be precipitation Sunday night into Monday morning," Stark said. "It could be a rain-snow mix with light snow accumulation."
High temperatures are expected to dip below freezing again on Tuesday.
