Spring arrives with snow on Long Island — but not much

Following a winter storm that dropped up to 3 1⁄2 inches of snow in some areas, Tuesday brought mostly sunny skies with highs in the upper 40s and a slight chance of showers in the overnight hours, forecasters said.

The storm that started on the first day of spring made for a slick Monday morning commute on Long Island but didn’t amount to much after all.

Initially, the National Weather Service called for 6 inches of snow for the East End, with portions of central Suffolk County to get about 3 to 4 inches and the rest of Long Island about 1 to 3 inches.

But the storm pushed a bit east, leaving much lower snowfall totals, the service’s Upton office said.

In Suffolk, Southampton and Port Jefferson had the highest totals, 3.5 inches each. Smithtown had 3.3, and Long Island MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma recorded 2.3 inches.
