Long Island forecast: Sunny, highs in upper 70s

Monday works out to be another day of sunshine for Long Island, but there’s a hint of rain in the forecast, the National Weather Service said.

Daily highs will be in the mid to upper 70s with winds from the south at 8 to 16 mph, the service’s Upton office said.

Beachgoers will face a “moderate risk for the development of rip currents at the ocean beaches,” according to a hazardous weather outlook.

Clouds develop later in the day, and there is a slight chance of showers starting after 10 p.m. and into Tuesday morning, the service said.

News 12 Long Island meteorologist Rich Hoffman called for spotty showers or storms overnight into Tuesday morning. But he doesn’t see the soaking kind of precipitation that’s needed.

Hoffman said Long Island is 2.79 inches below normal rainfall amounts, and despite the chance of overnight precipitation he doesn’t see “any all-day soaking rain events in the seven-day forecast.”

Tuesday’s forecast is for mostly cloudy skies with scattered showers and thunderstorms and daily highs near 77 degrees, he said.

There’s also some chance for spotty showers and thunderstorms again Tuesday night and most of the day Wednesday.
