For many Long Islanders, it was feeling more like midsummer than mid-May.

In fact, a daily high temperature set in 1977 was tied at Long Island MacArthur Airport, which hit 89 degrees at around 3:15 p.m. Thursday, said Jay Engle, National Weather Service meteorologist based in Upton.

Unofficial reports were also showing temperatures in the low 90s for areas along the North Shore, he said.

The forecast for Thursday had called for mostly sunny skies across Long Island with temperatures reaching into the mid-80s — perhaps hitting the 90-degree mark in some locations.

It was expected to be warmer in central areas of Long Island and cooler toward the shore, particularly the South Shore, said Faye Barthold, a meteorologist at the weather service office in Upton, earlier in the morning.

There is an air quality alert for the region until 10 p.m. Thursday, indicating an elevated level of ozone.

People, especially those with respiratory conditions, are advised to limit strenuous outdoor activities.

Along with the warmer temperatures, expect southwest winds of 7 to 16 mph, forecasters said.

On Friday, there is a 20 percent chance of showers and a thunderstorm after noon, the weather service said.

Saturday and Sunday will be sunny to mostly sunny with daytime temperatures in the mid-60s, the weather service said.
