Long Island reaches new record as temps climb to 76 degrees

For the second day in a row, Long Island saw record-breaking high temperatures, as a little bit of summer made its way into mid-October.
Long Island MacArthur Airport reached 76 degrees on Tuesday, surpassing the previous daily record of 74 degrees, set in 2006, according to the National Weather Service.
Originally forecast to reach about 78 degrees, that was in question as of just before 3 p.m., given the sea breezes coming off the water, said Jay Engle, weather service meteorologist in Upton.
In fact, the high for the day turned out to be 76 degrees.
The summerlike weather is courtesy of a Bermuda high nestling over the region, according to the weather service’s Upton office.
On Monday, a record high of 77 degrees was set at the airport, surpassing the previous daily high of 76 in 1996, the service said.
Conditions should be warm again on Wednesday, when daily highs push into the low 80s under partly sunny skies, the service said.
A passing cold front brings a slight chance of rain Wednesday night and into Thursday morning.
The service calls for a 20 percent to 30 percent chance of showers from the overnight hours into Thursday morning.
“Wet weather Thursday and Friday and colder weather for the weekend,” Hoffman said. “Highs go from near 80 on Tuesday to near 60 for the weekend.”
