July is starting off with a pow, as the first named tropical storm of the season, Arthur, is expected to pass to the southeast of Long Island on Friday night.

June, though, was just a little "ho-hum," one forecaster said. The month brought some nice days, some warm, muggy days and "no real significant systems," said Joey Picca, National Weather Service meteorologist based in Upton.

Still, of note, there were no 90-degree days in the month at Long Island MacArthur Airport, with June 16 the average date for moving into the hot zone, according to the weather service, which for the past 30 years has maintained the Island's weather records for the airport in Ronkonkoma.

On June 18 this year the temperature did flirt with 90, but got no higher than 89, the service said.

The average temperature for the month was 70.4, two degrees above normal.

Monthly rainfall of 1.79 inches, though, was 2.48 inches below normal.

That's likely to be partially made up, Picca said, when a system from the west, with a boost from moisture preceding Arthur, is expected to deliver an average of 1 to 2 inches Thursday into Friday.
