Back-to-school forecast: Long Island students to see clear skies, mild temperatures

Thousands of Long Island students will return to school this week under sunny skies and with moderate late-summer temperatures through Thursday, the National Weather Service said.
Daytime highs in the upper 70s and overnight lows in the upper 50s and 60s are forecast for Nassau and Suffolk counties from Tuesday and Wednesday, when 75 and 33 local districts respectively return to their classrooms.
The clear, comfortably warm afternoons continue Thursday, when another 12 districts resume classes, with a 40% chance of rain Thursday night, forecasters said. Friday is expected to become clear once again, leading into another seasonably sunny, warm weekend. Winds are expected to be light all week.
"Anyone who has an outdoor activity should be good with these temperatures that are seasonable or just a degree or two below seasonal," said Bryan Ramsey, a metrologist with the National Weather Service in Upton.
Three districts, Jericho, Bethpage and Herricks, began classes last week.
