Long Island weather: 80s and sunny for Saturday

A third and final day of 80-degree weather is expected Saturday before a cold front moves in from the east, bringing rain and high winds on Sunday, forecasters said.

While temperatures are to be a bit cooler than they were on Thursday and Friday, Saturday's high on Long Island will still hover near 80 degrees.

Just before noon, the temperature was 79 degrees in Islip. The record high for June 1 is 90 degrees, set in 1988 in Islip.

"It's going to feel very humid, but the winds blowing right off the ocean are going to help keep the temperature from rising the way they had over the last couple days," said David Stark, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Upton.

Friday's high reached 89 just before 11 a.m. at Brookhaven National Laboratory, higher than the normal 70s for the day but short of the 1987 daily record of 94.

The service Saturday morning issued a hazardous weather outlook that includes the South Shore of Long Island because of the moderate risk for a rip current development at Atlantic Ocean beaches.

Severe thunderstorms are expected late Sunday afternoon and evening ahead of a cold front. The storms will bring high, damaging winds and the potential for flash flooding due to heavy showers.

There is also the possibility for moderate to high rip current activity on Sunday.

A slight possibility for flooding could continue into Monday morning, meteorologists said.

Areas west and north of the shore are expected to see higher temperatures. State environmental officials on Saturday issued an air quality health advisory for New York City and the Lower Hudson Valley for elevated levels of pollution.

The advisory is to take effect at 11 a.m. and last for 12 hours.

People -- particularly infants, the elderly and those with asthma -- who are sensitive to higher levels of pollutants are advised to limit strenuous outdoor physical activity.
