Long Island forecast: Above-average temps as spring begins

Above-average temperatures are in store for Long Island for the first week of spring, with a mix of clouds and sun through at least Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.
Sunday's high topped out near 60 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. That’s more than 10 degrees warmer than the average vernal equinox temperature of just under 50 at Long Island MacArthur Airport in Islip, the weather service said.
Sunday night will be cloudy with temperatures dropping to about 40 and a small chance of showers but skies should clear by Monday morning.
Monday will be sunny with a high in the upper 50s with northwest winds between 10 to 14 mph, the weather service said. By Monday night, the clouds will increase with a low about 40 and winds will drop to 8 mph.
Tuesday will be partly sunny with a high in the upper 50s, and northwest winds between 6 to 10 mph, before the temperature dips to about 36 at night with light winds around 6 mph, the weather service said.
Temperatures will be cooler Wednesday with a high in the upper 40s and rain likely after 2 p.m.
“As we get into late Wednesday, we’re looking at rain for the area with that pulling out on Thursday night into Friday,” said Jim Connolly, of the National Weather Service. He added that average temperatures for this time of year are around 50.
Rain should continue after dark with areas of fog and a low about 40. There is a 80% chance of precipitation.
More rain is in the Thursday forecast before 11 a.m. with a chance of showers in the afternoon. The high is predicted to be in the mid-50s, according to the weather service. The low on a mostly cloudy Thursday night will drop to about 41.
Then both Friday and Saturday look partly sunny with highs in the mid and lower 50s respectively. Nighttime tempertues are forecast to be around the low 40s and high 30s.
Showers return on Sunday with a 40% chance of showers and partly sunny skies and a high near 50.
