Rainfall begins, but morning commute will be wet, sloppy

The snowfall and below-normal temperatures have ended, but the slippery roads aren’t going away just yet, forecasts show.

Temperatures will rise to 44 degrees by 5 a.m. Tuesday. Little or no ice accumulation is expected, according to the National Weather Service. Heavy rain and patchy fog will greet commuters as the temperatures soar to 56 degrees. Gusty winds will reach 34 mph in the afternoon.

The weather service said in addition to rain Tuesday morning, a coastal flood advisory is in effect from 1 to 6 p.m. Tuesday on the South Shore of Nassau and Suffolk. During Tuesday afternoon’s high tides, high winds and water flows could send waves 2 1⁄2 to 3 feet above normal.

The weather service said residents could expect “flooding of the most vulnerable shore roads and basements.” It said most roads would remain passable and the impact to property is expected to be minimal.

Monday night, more than a half-dozen Long Island Rail Road trains were delayed, but a spokesman said none of the late departures were related to the weather.

Temperatures will fluctuate through the rest of the week, dipping to 43 degrees Wednesday and 37 degrees Thursday, before increasing slightly on Friday to 38 degrees.

It will be mostly sunny for much of the week.
