Long Island weather: Another ‘springlike day’ follows early fog

A spate of springlike days — including a record high on Friday — will linger until late this weekend, when temperatures will begin to cool, according to the National Weather Service.

Six out of the most recent seven days have now registered high temperatures in the 50s or 60s, the service said.

Long Island MacArthur Airport in Islip hit at least 64 degrees at as of midafternoon Friday, breaking the record for that day, the weather service said. Areas of fog were expected for the Friday overnight hours.

There’s one more such springlike day to come — Saturday — before Long Island goes back down to highs of the mid- to upper 40s Sunday and Monday, the weather service said.

While chilly, that would still be above the normal high of 42 degrees for this time of year, said Jay Engle, weather service meteorologist in Upton.

Saturday will bring cloudy skies and, starting in the afternoon, increasing chances for showers. The most likely time for showers and possibly a thunderstorm comes around late afternoon into early evening, Engle said. Gusty winds also can be expected in the mix, with low temperatures in the 30s.

Skies will clear for Sunday, making way for some sunshine, with high temperatures of around 44 degrees.

At that point, “it will feel like winter again on Sunday,” said Matt Hammer, News 12 Long Island meteorologist.

Monday will be mostly sunny, also with highs in the mid- to upper 40s.

As of day-end Thursday, the temperature so far in February at the Islip airport averaged out to 35.9 degrees — 3.6 degrees above normal, according to weather service data. That ranks as the eighth warmest Feb 1 to 23 stretch since records for the airport started being kept in 1984, according to the Northeast Regional Climate Center.
