Weather: Rain Wednesday night, Thursday from Fred's remnants
The National Weather Service warned of flash flooding Wednesday night into Thursday, but forecasters aren't sure how drenched Long Island will be from Tropical Depression Fred as it moves up from the southeast.
"There remains uncertainty on exactly how far east … the threat for flash flooding will be. The track of the remnants of Fred will determine the eastward extent of the threat," the weather service said in its Tuesday evening briefing, which will update Wednesday morning.
The briefing said, as of now, it appears areas west of Long Island will get the worst flooding — one to two inches with locally heavier rain. But heavy rain is nevertheless forecast for at least parts of Nassau County starting Wednesday night and the threat of an isolated tornado "exists across the entire region," the weather service said.
Fred was moving through Georgia and North Carolina Tuesday with heavy rain, 65 mph winds and tornadoes.
A 50% chance of rain and thunderstorms is predicted for Wednesday night, and then off and on through Thursday.
Friday, Saturday and Sunday all are forecast to have a 30% to 40% chance of showers.
