Long Island forecast: Chance of heavy showers Monday night

Some areas of Long Island could see bouts of heavy rain later Monday night and into early morning Tuesday, forecasters say.

That’s as showers and thunderstorms are likely, possibly starting after 7 or 8 p.m. Monday, but with the best chances for after midnight, said Faye Morrone, National Weather Service meteorologist in Upton.

“With plenty of moisture available, some of these storms could produce heavy rainfall, along with gusty winds,” the weather service said in its late Monday afternoon regional outlook.

An air quality alert remains in effect through 11 p.m., Monday, with a high risk for rip currents through 9 p.m.

Tuesday then starts out cloudy, with skies clearing later in the morning, the weather service said. Temperatures were expected to rise to the upper 80s — low 80s for the East End — with less humidity in the picture.

Temperatures then return closer to normal, with highs in the low 80s, expected Wednesday and Thursday. The normal high for this time of year is 78 degrees.
