With Long Island having seen some scattered, light rain showers Friday afternoon, most of the precipitation stayed off to the north over Connecticut, the National Weather Service said.

The Island can expect dry, cloudy skies overnight into Saturday, with lows around 42 degrees. That’s after having reached at least 47 degrees Friday afternoon at Long Island MacArthur Airport.

Through the weekend the weather is going to be unsettled, remaining under the influence of the frontal system that brought those showers to the north, said Jay Engle, National Weather Service meteorologist in Upton. The precipitation for Long Island depends on the meandering nature of that system, he said.

A shift to the north means more rain for Connecticut. A shift to the south finds Long Island more of a target, with expectations for the system to “sag back down south tomorrow, reintroducing the chance of showers,” he said Friday.

That’s as temperatures head up to the mid-50s Saturday. News 12 Long Island meteorologist Rich Hoffman on Friday morning mentioned the possibility for the lower 60s in Nassau County.

Patchy fog can be added into the mix Saturday night, with overnight lows in the upper 30s. The call for Sunday, especially, is a tricky, Engle said, given that “wobbling” front.

The forecast is for light rain, drizzle and some patchy fog, with cooler temperatures in the low 40s, he said. There could be breaks in the precipitation, but “pinpointing the exact timing is difficult.”
