Long Island can brace for a chilly Tuesday, the National Weather Service said.

Daily highs in the mid 40s under sunny skies are expected across Nassau and Suffolk counties, the service's Upton office said.

News 12 Long Island meteorologist Bruce Avery calls for a daily high of 46 and says it's about 5 degrees below normal highs for this time of year.

Avery noted that Tuesday afternoon and evening is traditionally a "heavy travel" time, so he urged motorists looking to get away early for Thanksgiving to use caution.

He called for clear conditions and cold temperatures Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, with overnight lows in the low 30s.

"Wednesday will be mainly sunny and milder with a high of 59," Avery said. "Thanksgiving looks lovely with lots of sun and a high of 58."

Friday warms slightly with daily highs near 60, and there's a bit of chance for showers on Saturday, he said.

Saturday high temperatures are expected to be near 50.

On Sunday, the close of the extended holiday weekend, it's likely to be mainly cloudy with highs in the upper 40s.
