Long Island forecast: Temps on summerlike Memorial Day to soar past 90 Tuesday

Temperatures soared to summerlike highs Memorial Day with abundant sunshine, but forecasters say the mercury is due to rise even more Tuesday.

Monday's temperatures in the mid 80s were about 10 degrees higher than normal for this time of year, according to the National Weather Service. And Tuesday, the taste of summer continues with more sunshine, light winds and highs expected to surpass 90 degrees, higher humidity and possibility of thunderstorms at night, forecasters said.

For the rest of the workweek, highs will return to a more seasonable range in the mid to high 70s, the weather service said.

Wednesday should be partly sunny but there is a small chance for rain Wednesday afternoon. The high of 74 will drop to about 60 degrees at night, when there is an increased chance of showers and storms.

Thursday continues the trend, with partial sunshine and a high of 77 degrees but a chance of rain that could fall overnight, and through Friday morning. 

After a cloudy Friday with a high of a cooler 73, next weekend looks picture perfect with sunshine both days and a high in the mid 70s, the weather service said.
