With colder temperatures settling in, Saturday is expected to bring partly sunny skies with highs in the upper 30s, forecasters say.

Wind conditions diminish, so wind chill isn’t expected to be much at play, said Jay Engle, National Weather Service meteorologist, based in Upton. Overnight lows dip to the mid-20s.

That leads into Sunday which starts off with partly sunny skies in the morning, and brings highs around the mid-30s — as well as a slight chance for light snow showers in the afternoon, Engle said.

Sunday night through Monday brings a 70 percent to 80 percent chance of precipitation, the weather service says. There is potential for Nassau and western Suffolk to see that start as “a little bit of snow,” but primarily for Long Island, this is being seen as “a rain event,” Engle said.

Signs were pointing, as of late afternoon Friday, to milder air coming up from the south to bring a quick transition to rain, he said.

With the event still 48 hours away, he said forecasters were moderately confident that the Island “would not see much in the way of snow.”
