With a storm system shifting further to the south, Long Island was expected to get just an inch or less of light snow on Friday — but it will be a chilly day.

Snow will start Thursday night and should be winding down in early afternoon Friday, said Carlie Buccola, National Weather Service meteorologist based in Upton.

But the system appears to be tracking farther to the south, so it was expected to be “just grazing our area” on Friday, she said Thursday.

Still, early morning commuters should drive with care, as slippery conditions are possible.

Friday also still promises to be cold, with highs in the upper 30s. Saturday was expected to bring highs of around 40, the weather service said, with a slight chance of rain showers, then snow showers Saturday night into Sunday.

But a look to next week shows a “significant warming trend,” the weather service said.

The outlook for next Tuesday through Saturday puts Long Island in the area with a significant 70 to 80 percent chance for above normal temperatures, says the Climate Prediction Center.

The average high for that period is 45.4 degrees, with 29.6 the average low, says Jessica Spaccio, climatologist with the Northeast Regional Climate Center, based at Cornell University.

Tuesday was looking to have highs in the upper 50s, with Wednesday looking to have highs near 60, the service said.
