Long Islanders can expect to wake up Tuesday to partly sunny conditions, but should plan for increasing cloudiness and rain later in the day, turning into a probable dusting of snow, meteorologists say.

Most parts of the Island will see rain starting after around 3 p.m. — a later start for eastern areas — with snow starting to mix in, and even the possibility of “brief bursts of moderate to heavy snow” during the evening commute, said Joe Pollina, weather service meteorologist based in Upton. That could limit visibility to half a mile, he said.

Still, just a tenth of an inch is in the forecast he said, with precipitation winding down for most of the Island by around midnight. Patchy black ice could be an issue after around 9 p.m.

Tuesday’s precipitation will be a disappointment to snow lovers, said Rich Hoffman, News 12 Long Island meteorologist. “Things are not ideal for any major snowfall as of now.”

Highs Tuesday are expected in the low to mid-40s, feeling more like 20 to 30 degrees, thanks to wind chill, Pollina said.

Wednesday brings highs in the low to mid-30s, with the chance of snow flurries in the early afternoon.
