Long Island weather: Cool, dry Thursday with highs to mid 70s

Thursday starts a stretch of dry, cool days for Long Island, the National Weather Service said.

News 12 Long Island meteorologist Rich Hoffman called Thursday’s conditions — sunny with highs in the mid 70s — a big break from the humid weather of recent days.

After matching a record high temperature of 83 on Wednesday, Long Island gets much cooler air on Thursday, thanks in part to a passing cold front.

The 83 degrees at 3:18 p.m. Wednesday at Long Island MacArthur Airport matched the daily high temperatures of three other years, the most recent of which was 2008, according to the service.

The low to mid 70s is about normal for this time of year, the service said.

East winds Thursday are 9 to 15 mph, according to the service’s Upton office.

Hoffman said the cooler temperatures stretch into the weekend, but there’s a chance for showers on Sunday.

During the afternoon hours on Thursday clouds develop and winds shift to the north-northeast, Hoffman said.

Skies clear overnight with dry, cool conditions. Overnight lows are in the mid 50s.

Friday opens with mostly sunny skies and daily highs again in the low to mid 70s, Hoffman said.
