The recent sweet taste of an early spring might turn sour Thursday, when the National Weather Service has forecast a chance of snow.

Tuesday’s high temperature in Islip hit 67 degrees, much warmer than the March 10 normal high temperature of 45, but not as high as the 73 recorded on March 10, 2016, according to the weather service. About 50 miles west, in Central Park, the daily high temperature reached 80 degrees, the earliest day the mercury climbed that high in that area in any calendar year.

But temperatures will drop to 55 on Wednesday, sink to 50 Wednesday night, linger there through Thursday then plunge to around 30 Thursday evening, the weather service forecast. A chance of precipitation will persist throughout both days.

On Wednesday, thunderstorms could rumble between 6 p.m. and midnight, weather service meteorologist Bryan Ramsey told Newsday.

“We’re really not expecting too much,” Ramsey said of rain totals Wednesday evening.

Thursday rains will continue into the evening, and as temperatures drop, there will be “a chance you could see maybe a mixing of snow,” Ramsey said. Hardly, if any, accumulation is anticipated.

Temperatures will reach around 45 degrees on a partly sunny Friday and near 50 on a sunny Saturday, according to the weather service. A slightly warmer high is forecast for a cloudy Sunday.

An 80% chance of precipitation Sunday evening will linger through Monday, the weather service forecast.

Another chance of snow has been forecast for Tuesday, but it would likely be “a passing flurry or two” before precipitation “gets cut off,” Ramsey said.

To those worried they will have to shovel next week, Ramsey added: “We’re not expecting any accumulation at all.”
