Long Island weather: Drier, colder after chance of showers

The workweek is starting out Monday with drier skies, though there is a slight chance for a brief spurt of rain or snow showers in the late afternoon, forecasters say. And stay tuned for a more significant stretch of rain later in the week.

Look for colder weather during the next 48 hours, said Rich Hoffman, News 12 Long Island meteorologist. Monday, with light winds, should head up to the mid-40s. The normal high for the day is 42 degrees at Long Island MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma.

Just before 11 a.m. the airport was reporting partly sunny skies and a temperature of 43 degrees, with winds from the west/northwest gusting to 22 mph.

Overnight lows are expected to dip to the upper 20s for Tuesday morning, Hoffman said.

Tuesday should be sunny, breezy and cooler, with highs in the mid-30s, the weather service said.

There’s more sunshine for Wednesday, warming up to about 40, before Thursday brings highs in the upper 40s and the likelihood for rain overnight into Friday.
