Long Island weather: Temperature hits record 64 degrees in Ronkonkoma

While enthusiastic shoppers may not have noticed, Black Friday brought a record high for the day at Long Island MacArthur Airport.

The Ronkonkoma airport reached 64 degrees shortly before noon, quickly dropping back to 63, said Carlie Buccola, National Weather Service meteorologist based in Upton. The previous record was 63, set in 1999.

The month is also on course to potentially be the warmest November since records started being kept in 1984, said Jay Engle, also a meteorologist in Upton. With 50.3 degrees the average monthly temperature as of day's end Thursday, the record for the first 26 days of the month -- 49.8 degrees set in 2011 -- has already been surpassed, he said.

Friday was the 12th day this month that had highs in the 60s -- with two days reaching 70, according to weather service data. Not surprisingly, the average monthly temperature, as of day's end Thursday, was 4.5 degrees above normal.

The normal high for this time of year is 50 degrees, News 12 Long Island meteorologist Bruce Avery said.

Still, you know what's said about all good things coming to an end? Looks like we'll be gradually dipping back to the normal zone and then some, with Saturday expected to reach highs in the mid-50s -- along with a good chance for afternoon showers; Sunday, hitting around 50; and, get ready for this: Monday looks like highs will be in the mid-40s.
