Forecast: Below normal temps for Long Island

Sunny skies and unseasonably cold temperatures are ahead for at least the next two days, forecasters say.

Monday and Tuesday call for daily highs in the mid to upper 30s with mostly sunshine across Nassau and Suffolk counties, according to the National Weather Service's Upton office.

Those temperatures are about 5 to 10 degrees colder than normal for this time of year, according to the service's statistics.

News 12 Long Island meteorologist Rich Hoffman said Monday the unseasonable cold is likely to linger until the middle of next month.

"I really don't see a break in the colder than normal weather until at least mid April," Hoffman said. "We will have some periods of mild to warm air, but overall the pattern will stay colder than normal."

Overnight lows of 18 for Monday and 24 for Tuesday are expected before a little bit of warmth pushes in on Wednesday, when daily highs are in the mid 40s.

But rain also comes in with the milder temperatures; chance of rain Wednesday and into Thursday morning range from 20 percent to 30 percent.

On Thursday, the chance of rain ranges from 60 percent to 70 percent, with temperatures climbing to the mid 50s.

Friday calls for drier conditions, with daily highs near 50.

Dry weather remains for Saturday and Sunday, but with slightly cooler daily highs in the low to mid 40s for both days.
