Long Island weather forecast: Moderate risk for rip currents

The workweek for Long Islanders starts out with Monday’s dry, mostly sunny skies and highs in the mid 80s, thanks to a high pressure system building in, forecasters say.

Light northerly winds switch to southwesterly in the afternoon.

Beach goers should know that there’s a moderate risk for rip currents to develop at ocean-facing beaches, where temperatures are to be just a couple of degrees cooler, the National Weather Service said. And with a very high UV index, unprotected skin can burn easily.

Clear skies are in the forecast for overnight Monday, which brings lows of around 67 degrees, said News 12 Long Island meteorologist Rich Hoffman.

Tuesday is expected to bring much of the same -- mostly sunny skies, he said, and highs of around 85 degrees.
