It’s no joke, people. Forecasters are saying Long Island could well see temperatures make at least a brief visit to the 60s later this week.
That would be after a long stretch of below-normal temperatures and after Monday morning tied the daily record for low temperatures at 26 degrees at Long Island MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma.
Early Tuesday was set to bring a rain/snow mix, then switch to all rain “an hour or so after sunrise,” with no accumulation expected, said Joe Pollina, National Weather Service meteorologist in Upton. Temperatures were then looking to head up to the mid-40s.
Then, “a nice warm up coming our way,” said Rich Hoffman, News 12 Long Island meteorologist. “By the end of the week, temperatures will be above normal.”
The airport’s normal daily highs for the upcoming stretch are 56 to 57 degrees, with the normal lows at 39 to 40.
That’s as Wednesday, with sunny skies and highs in the low 50s, sees temperatures starting to rise to the mid-50s Thursday, the mid-60s for Friday and Saturday, and down to the low 50s for Sunday, the weather service said.
Prospects were not looking good for above average — or even normal — temperatures to stick around for long, though. For next week, Monday through Sunday, the Climate Prediction Center was looking at a tilt, on average, back toward below normal temperatures.
