While there's a very slight chance for a shower Wednesday night, patchy fog is expected in the morning, forecasters say, with highs Thursday in the low 80s, but with humidity persisting.

Widespread and potentially "long duration" rain, with locally heavy downpours, is in the forecast starting overnight Thursday and possibly lasting into Saturday, said Carlie Buccola, National Weather Service meteorologist based in Upton.

Both morning and evening commutes could be affected on Friday, she said.

Around an inch and a half of rain is forecast for Nassau from 2 p.m. Thursday through 2 p.m. Saturday, the weather service said, with amounts diminishing from west to east, down to around a third of an inch for the East End. That's according to the late Wednesday afternoon forecast.

Showers and thunderstorms are likely for Friday, according to News 12 Long Island meteorologists. The weekend could bring more rain, especially Saturday morning, said Matt Hammer, meteorologist with News 12.
