With temperatures expected to fall into the 20s, a freeze warning is in effect beginning 8 p.m. Tuesday and lasting until 10 a.m. Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.
The coldest temperatures are expected “overnight into daybreak,” the weather service said. The warning means the low temperatures could kill vulnerable plants if left out overnight.
Long Island saw partly sunny to sunny skies Tuesday with a breezy north wind and colder than normal temperatures.
Daily highs Tuesday across Nassau and Suffolk counties were in the upper 30s, the service’s Upton office said. But with a north wind blowing from 16 to 20 mph, it felt well below freezing.
It’s a bit colder than normal for April, and News 12 Long Island meteorologist Rich Hoffman said those conditions will be in place for about the next seven days.
“So it’s OK for people to complain about the cold,” Hoffman said.
There’s a chance for a daily record low Wednesday morning, Hoffman said, bettering the 28 degrees set in 1995.
He also said there’s a chance overnight to break the mark for the lowest April temperature on record — 23 degrees on April 3, 2008.
Wednesday is expected to be a mix of sun and clouds and chilly again.
Daily highs are in the mid- to upper 40s. There’s also a chance of showers developing Wednesday night into Thursday morning, Hoffman said.
