Long Island weather: Rain and gusty winds
Winds will be part of a strong storm hitting Long Island on Saturday which could bring gusts up to 50 mph and as much as 1½ inches of rain, forecasters said.
A wind advisory will be in effect for Nassau and Suffolk counties through 6 a.m. Saturday, with a few gusts near 50 mph, forecasters said.
A coastal flood advisory has been issued for southern Nassau and Suffolk counties through 5 a.m. Saturday.
Skies should clear by Sunday morning, and Halloween trick-or-treaters should be able to skip potentially costume-wrecking coats as a daytime high of 64 degrees is forecast. Breezes are expected to calm down to 7 to 11 mph, the National Weather Service said.
The start of November on Monday and much of Tuesday could look like near twins, though slightly cooler. Showers may return Tuesday night, but then clear out Wednesday before possible rain on Thursday.
During the days, temperatures will slowly ease from the low 60s to upper 50s by the middle of next week, and descend at night from the upper 40s and low 50s to the low 40s.
Rain through Saturday
Rain from Friday night will continue into Saturday afternoon and evening, forecasters said.
There could be a lull in the rain Saturday morning as the main low pressure system, with its warm, rising air condensing into clouds, departs west.
When the rain may restart depends on when another low pressure system travels in from the south, the weather service said.
The rain should ease Saturday night, with "possibly an isolated rumble of thunder or two across eastern sections during the evening," the weather service said.
This week's nor’easter has trapped water in the back bays on Long Island’s South Shore, the weather service said. It predicted, "More widespread minor flooding is expected with the early Saturday morning high tide given the aforementioned forcing and concerns with water levels remaining high in the Great South Bay."
