It looks like sunny or partly sunny skies will rule from Friday right through the weekend, along with below normal temperatures, forecasters say.

Conditions are “dry and colder than normal” for the seven days ahead, said Rich Hoffman, News 12 Long Island meteorologist. However, he also pointed to a warmup, but not until later next week.

As for now, we have the “best early season skiing in years,” he said. “It is cold at the slopes for the weekend with highs in the 20s.”

For Long Island, this breezy Friday is looking to make it up to about 38 degrees, Saturday to only about 35 and Sunday to about 37, the National Weather Service said. The normal highs for that stretch at Long Island MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma are 45 and 46.

Wind chill is expected to be in play Friday and Saturday, making temperatures feel cooler still. Overnight Friday to sunrise Saturday, lows should be in the low 20s.

A powerful coastal storm for late Sunday into Monday is still forecast to stay well to the south of Long Island, said Carlie Buccola, weather service meteorologist in Upton.

Those cool, sunny conditions persist into early next week, but we could see temperatures bounce back as of next Thursday, Hoffman said. That would be at least into the normal range, warming up to the mid-40s, with 44 the airport’s normal high for the day.

The call from the Climate Prediction Center is for a 60 percent probability for temperatures to average out at above normal for Dec. 14 to 20 for our area of the Northeast, with the same likelihood for above average precipitation.
