Long Island weather: Sunny on Saturday but rain in evening

Most of Saturday will be sunny on Long Island, but that will change as showers come in the evening and return on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

Temperatures Saturday will reach near 80 degrees and fall to 70 by nightfall, the weather service said, as a moderate risk of rip currents at ocean beaches also led the weather service to issue a hazardous weather outlook for the day.

Da’Vel Johnson, a meteorologist with the weather service, said Friday evening that as the temperatures drop Saturday night, rain and strong winds will arrive.

"We could see winds of 40 to 60 miles an hour possible within the individual thunderstorms," he said. "It could be a line of thunderstorms that moves through in the early morning hours of Sunday."

During the day Sunday, the weather service put the odds at 60%, though showers may hold off until 2 p.m. or so, adding that while rainfalls of less than a tenth of an inch can happen, high amounts are possible during thunderstorms. Temperatures on Sunday will be similar to Saturday, the weather service said.

"There’s even a possibility that we can get some more showers with possible thunderstorms late Sunday going into Monday as well," Johnson said.

The forecasts for some other sections of the country also reveal potential hazards, with excessive rain possible in the Southwest and a slight risk of severe thunderstorms in the Upper Midwest through Saturday, according to the weather service’s Weather Prediction Center. And the dry heat wave in the Northern High Plains and Northern Rockies and parts of the Great Basin again increases the odds of more wildfires.

On the Island, the forecast for Monday to Thursday shows sunny skies and daytime temperatures officially hovering in the mid-80s — but it could be warmer, and that dreaded humidity will have returned. With Joan Gralla
