Long Island weather: Rounds of showers coming this weekend
The main features of the weekend weather on Long Island — temperatures around 60 degrees and a good dose of showers, showers, showers.
Friday around 3 p.m. was delivering cloudy skies as expected at Long Island MacArthur Airport. The temperature was 62 degrees, with winds from the south, gusting to 17 mph. Normals for the day at the Ronkonkoma airport are 56 for the high and 40, the low.
Given weather conditions elsewhere, both Kennedy and LaGuardia airports around mid-afternoon were reporting arrival delays averaging about an hour, with some departures impacted as well, the Federal Aviation Administration said on its website.
By Friday night “we’re going to be watching that wet weather,” said Rich Hoffman, News 12 Long Island meteorologist.
A few showers were possible earlier Friday, but they become likely after 11 p.m., with potential for a thunderstorm also in the picture, the National Weather Service said.
As temperatures hold steady in the 50s overnight, rain continues into Saturday morning.
Look for clouds and showers in the morning, with precipitation clearing for the afternoon, said Rich Von Ohlen, also a News 12 meteorologist. As for temps, highs in the mid-60s are forecast.
Sunday, then, is not a washout, he said — also “not a perfect day.”
Stray showers could be around Sunday morning, with showers becoming likely by 8 p.m. or so and continuing overnight into Monday.
