Long Island weather: Chance of rain, thunderstorms Friday night
Following a brief dry stretch, Long Islanders will want to gear up for chances of rain and thunderstorms, expected to get started Friday evening, forecasters said.
While chances for more severe storms had somewhat increased for locations further to the north and west, areas of the Island could still see some heavy rain and possibly a “lightening show,” said Jay Engle, National Weather service meteorologist in Upton.
Look for any precipitation to start arriving in the Nassau County area around 8 p.m.
There are chances of thunderstorms, some possibly severe, and flash flooding for Nassau County and western Suffolk County, the weather service said, mentioning, also, in a hazardous weather statement the potential for an isolated tornado. Lesser storms are expected in eastern Suffolk, the weather service said.
A heat advisory remains in effect for Nassau County through 6 p.m. Friday, forecasters said.
Chances of showers and storms linger through the overnight hours, said Tim Morrin, weather service meteorologist.
Saturday morning could see a break in the precipitation activity, Morrin said, before another batch of rain moves in.
Temperatures will hit a high in the upper 80s Saturday and the mid-70s Sunday, the weather service said.
