Long Island weather: Cool, rainy weekend expected

Long Islanders will wake up Saturday to a stretch of cool, showery weather, which looks to last through Mother’s Day on Sunday, forecasters say.

The early morning hours will bring a chances of showers, which then become likely by mid-morning Saturday along with possible thunderstorms, which can produce locally heavy downpours, the National Weather Service said in its late Friday afternoon forecast.

There’s also potential for localized flooding with thunderstorm activity, the weather service said in a hazardous weather statement.

Look for below normal temperatures, thanks to a mix of “clouds, showers and onshore winds.” That means the day is expected to warm up to the mid to upper 50s, weather service meteorologist Jim Connolly said.

The normal high for the day at Long Island MacArthur Airport is 66 degrees.

Sunday will bring similar temperatures, with chances for periods of showers, Connolly said.

It’s worthwhile to check back Saturday for the updated forecast, as Connolly said that where an expected warm front sets up will affect what precipitation comes this way Sunday.

“We could luck out,” he said, with showers just in the morning.
