Forecast for the week: Spring settles in across Long Island

Seasonable spring temperatures are expected on Long Island this week but they will also bring along more clouds than sun on Monday and Tuesday, meteorologists said.

On Monday, the high temperatures are expected to be in the lower-to-middle 60s but cooler along the South Shore and the Twin Forks, meteorologist Joe Pollina, of the National Weather Service’s Upton station, said Sunday night. The sun is only predicted to “peek out” during the afternoon from behind the clouds.

Pollina said this week’s temperatures will be seasonably warm for Long Island. The normal high is 65 degrees in Islip.

“A lot of people wish and think it should be warmer,” he said, noting that Long Island is “always a little cooler than it is in the city.”

Tuesday’s high temperatures are forecast to be in the mid-60s with 50 to 60 percent cloud coverage, although it will still be sunnier than Monday.

On Wednesday and Thursday, the daytime high will reach about 65 degrees and the overnight lows will be about 50 degrees, forecasts show. Thursday night will bring a 30 percent chance of rain after 9 p.m., according to the weather service.

Weather service meteorologist Bill Goodman said it’s not quite time to head to the beaches. Water temperatures on both shores are still in the 50s. The sea and sound typically warm up in late May or early June, he added.

Friday will offer the warmest temperature this week, with daytime highs near 70 degrees.Goodman said a large air mass moving up from the south to Long Island will make that day warmer.

Friday night’s low will be around 53 degrees.
