Long Island weather: Highs in low 60s again Saturday

After possible early morning fog in some areas, Saturday looks promising, yet another day of dry skies with highs in the low 60s, forecasters say.

It follows a string of six days that reached 60 or above at Long Island MacArthur Airport. In fact, a daily record high — 63 degrees set in 1999 — could be broken Saturday, said News 12 Long Island meteorologist Rich Hoffman.

“And then go find the heavy coat,” he said, as “colder weather moves over Long Island Sunday through Tuesday.”

The early morning hours of Sunday bring a 60 percent chance of scattered showers, which could well continue at least into the afternoon, according to the National Weather Service’s Upton office.

But Sunday also brings a temperature change, about a 15 degree drop, so there’s potential that any precipitation that might linger overnight Sunday into Monday could present itself as snow showers, said Faye Barthold, weather service meteorologist.

The highs Sunday were looking to reach the mid- to upper 40s, she said, and dip down overnight to the low 30s, bringing that “slight chance of snow showers.”

What’s more, Sunday and into a good part of Monday are expected to be “quite windy,” so yes, we are moving into weather territory that’s “more what you think of November,” she said.

As of Friday’s forecast, both Monday and Tuesday were expected to get only as high as the 40s, with overnight lows in the low 30s. Normal highs for this time of year are around the lower 50s, Barthold said.

As for Wednesday, which for many is a major travel day, skies are looking to be dry and sunny, and possibly just a little warmer, into the high 40s.

There’s potential for Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, to creep into the lower 50s, according to the weather service, as well as bring some showers.
