Long Island weather: Some showers, with slight chance of snow

Blustery, showery conditions continue Friday afternoon — with potential for a few flakes to be added briefly to the mix before sunrise Saturday, forecasters say.

Around midafternoon Friday, Rich Von Ohlen, News 12 Long Island meteorologist, said there was a little gap, with not a lot of rain at the moment, but look for “another round” to arrive later in the afternoon.

At around 3 p.m., Long Island MacArthur Airport was reporting 46 degrees, with winds from the west gusting to 32 mph. Gusts were stronger still in Wantagh, at 39 mph, and 36 mph in Farmingdale.

Such winds were leading to flight arrival delays at LaGuardia Airport, with departure delays also reported, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

There’s a slight chance for showers into early morning Saturday, the National Weather Service said, also with a slight chance for snow to mix in briefly in the hours before sunrise.

That wind action continues overnight, Von Ohlen said, with “windy and chilly” the story for Saturday, as temperatures rise to the mid-40s. Have your shades handy, he said, but also, “hold on to your hat.”

Sunday, then, “is going to be the pick of the weekend,” he said. Mostly sunny, highs in the 50s and minus the strong winds.

Chances of rain return for Monday, with skies looking to be dry for the rest of the workweek.
