Look for a slight chance of showers, even a thunderstorm, Thursday evening into the nighttime hours, forecasters say.

Strong, possibly severe storms are expected to the north and east. But the National Weather Service says that as they move east toward Long Island, a marine layer of air “is expected to largely prohibit severe thunderstorms, but some heavy downpours are possible.”

Friday, then, brings sunshine, with temperatures rising to around 70 degrees, the weather service said.

Still, chances of showers enter the picture in the early morning hours of Saturday, with showers and even a possible thunderstorm likely during the day — with temperatures heading up to around the mid-60s — and into Saturday night. That’s according to the weather service’s late afternoon Thursday forecast.

As for Mother’s Day celebrations, they may be best held inside, as showers were also possible on Sunday, which was expected to warm up to the low 60s.
